With a list of wildlife ranging from gorillas and chimpanzees to big game and birds, it's hard to know where to start - and where to go. Use our wildlife guide to Uganda to get the details on where to go to see what.
Mountain gorillas are the super stars of these rugged montane forests but there are other mammals there as well: chimpanzees, colobus monkeys and baboons are among the 11 species of primates you may see and you'll be ticking off great forest birds as well - there are 350 recorded species including 23 Albertine Rift endemics plus an amazing 200 butterfly species.
The savannahs and woodlands may be home to lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and numerous antelope species, the famous Kazinga Channel is indeed full of hippo and crocodile but with a staggering 600 recorded bird species, Queen Elizabeth NP is one of the world's best bird watching destinations.
Bisected by the Nile River, Murchison Falls is home to a decent range of large mammals including elephant, buffalo, lion, hippo, giraffe and leopard, mostly in the north of the park. The real wildlife bonus lies in the forests of the south however - go on a guided walk in the Rabongo Forest for chimpanzees and colobus monkeys. With a bird count pushing 500 species, Murchison Falls is also a birder's paradise.
Great forest bird watching, clouds of dazzling butterflies and grand tropical forest trees set the scene for Kibale's main wildlife draw card - chimpanzees. It's probably Uganda's best chimp trekking destination with a population of around 500 chimps.
